The cacao tree has its origin roots in native Mexico. It
was first domesticated 3,000 years ago in equatorial South America, before
being domesticated in Central America by the Olmecs (Mexico). Depending on the
source, there is different opinions to when chocolate arrived in Europe.
However, it is though agreed that the first country in Europe to where the
brown gold first arrived was Spain. One of the believes is, that it was no less
than Christopher Columbus who is discovered the cacao tree and its beans after
intercepting a trade ship on a journey to America and brought the beans with
him back to Spain around year 1502.
Short history about cacao
The cacao tree is 4-8-meter-tall and stems from the
family Malvaceae. The tree originates from the tropical South America and has through
the years been planted in other tropical regions a well. Its seeds are used for
example cocoa powder and chocolate. The tree is very demanding in terms of temperature
and precipitation.
